Assessment Philosophy
Regardless of what might be present on many students’ wish lists, assessment, and therefore testing, is a necessary part of classroom life. However, when assessment practices are orchestrated appropriately, students will reap the benefits both socially and academically. There are three standard forms of assessment in a typical classroom: diagnostic, formative, and summative. Although some would argue that formative is the ideal assessment method, I believe that these three practices are most beneficial when used in combination. When one particular method is used more favorably than another, students will often experience disappointment and, as a result, discouragement regarding their academic achievement or lack thereof. I believe that both teachers and students profit when these assessment practices are used collectively.
