In the final year of my undergrad I wrote a sociology honours thesis that explored elementary aged children's involvement in extracurricular physical activity.
Research investigating risk taking behaviour among youth has established, contrary to popular belief, that the more involved that a youth is in their physical activity of choice, the more involved that they will also be in risky behaviour.
On the other hand, research suggests that these same youth will develop a better sense of self and friendly connections through their elevated levels of involvement in sports.
Throughout my research, the connection between the varying amounts of time spent in extracurricular physical activities and engagement in risky behaviour among youth was examined as well as the self-image that is constructed throughout this involvement.
