Education
2012-2013 St. Thomas University, Fredericton, NB:
I completed my Bachelor of Education at St. Thomas University in June 2013, specializing in elementary education. While at St. Thomas, I studied all of the available French Second Language methodology courses. I also took an English as a Second Language course that significantly broadended my understanding of language development.
2009-2012 University of New Brunswick:
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with first class honours in Sociology. I wrote my thesis on youth involvement in extracurricular activities, in particular sports, and the potential risk factors associated with over involvement. I continued to study French, to maintain my use of both languages.
2008-2009 University of Alberta:
I attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton on a full athletic scholarship in the Bachelor of Arts program. I trained fulltime and maintained my studies. While at school I volunteered with Habitats for Humanity and as the Birthday and Special Events Coordinator at a senior’s residence.
Related Work Experiences
International School of Nanshan Shenzhen: 2013-2014
The International School of Nanshan Shenzhen is a private Canadian school in China that uses a New Brunswick Curriculum. I have been fortunate enough to spend the year at ISNS working with five Kindergarten and ten Grade One students. The enthusiasm these children have towards learning has made me a better teacher and has been a constant challenge to improve my techniques within the classroom. Further, the opportunity to teach such a broad spectrum of intellectual and language ability has sharpened my differentiation skills.
New Maryland Elementary School – Student Teaching Placement: March- April 2013
My second teaching practicum was in a grade five classroom with twenty eight students. New Maryland Elementary has been designated as a model school for 21st century learning by NB’s Department of Education and recognized as a Pathfinder School by Microsoft (Partners in Learning – Global Innovative Schools Program). I enjoyed having the opportunity to work with upper elementary students and further explore using technology to differentiate and enrich my lessons.
Connaught Street Elementary School, Student Teaching Placement: November – December 2012
I completed my first teaching practicum in a Kindergarten class with twenty students. I worked with students whose families had recently immigrated to Canada and were just acquiring English as a second language. I also had two students with Autism in my class and learned about inclusionary practices.
University of New Brunswick 2009 – 2013
I volunteered as an academic tutor for varsity athletes. I have also coached school-aged athletes participating in youth programs provided by the university on the weekends.
Crabbe Mountain: Winters 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013
At Crabbe Mountain, I worked part-time providing snowboard and ski lessons to people of all ages. I have an abundance of experience with the school groups teaching both skiers and snowboarders. I have also worked closely with adults, I have twice been in charge of running a ten week adult women’s snowboard camp. I worked as a sit ski instructor for the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing, this was a step out of my comfort zone but a challenge that proved to be rewarding for both the skiers and myself.
