Kindergarten
My first internship was in a kindergarten class, it was a wonderful opportunity and I consider myself fortunate for having had the chance to work with the students. The kindergartener’s thirst for knowledge truly inspired me. I think that these young children demonstrate what the education system requires as a strong foundation, a desire to learn. The students in my class demonstrated enthusiasm about learning, they were excited to be at school every morning and genuinely grateful to be provided with knowledge. I think that the eagerness for knowledge present in our young learners needs to be held onto and extended throughout their entire education.
Below I have provided a glimpse into the eight weeks I spent in Kindergarten.

Math: Building 3D objects using shapes found in the classroom

Part of the Kindergarten curriculum involves recognizing 3D shapes. In order to meet this curriculum outcome, I had students build 3D objects with various shapes they found around the classroom.
This was an activity the students seemed to really enjoy and it was exciting for myself to see the objects come together so wonderfully.
These students built a horse using blocks from the hard block centre.
The student on the left below built a car, winter tires included!
The student on right built a chair using both the hard blocks from the play centre and the geometric shapes from the math centre.

This plan demonstrates the Kindergarten students morning routine as well as their modified Daily Five literacy block.
I enjoyed having the opportunity to work with students in small guided reading groups and feel as though this really prepared me for my future classrooms.
This plan is also included under my Language Arts methods tab.

You and Your World: We Celebrate

One of the You and Your World Curriculum outcomes for Kindergarten is to have students understand that families (local, national, and global) have varied traditions, rituals and celebrations.
This lesson introduces students to various traditions and celebrations and provides them with the opportunity to discuss some of their own.

This lesson also provided me with the opportunity to explain to the students that one of their classmates from Iran would be going home for his own holiday. This student is an ESL learner and it allowed him to actively participate in and at some points even lead the discussion.
It was so wonderful to see the excitement on his face when he recognized the word "Iran" and was able to show his classmates where on the globe it was located.

Visual Arts:

This lesson plan tied into what the students were learning in math about shapes.
The Art lesson began by discussing the shapes we recognized on our own body. Some students noticed that their heads were like circles and others pointed out that their arms were like rectangles.
Students then went to their individual art tables and created self-portraits using the shapes that they had been learning about.

Music: Sant Song
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/6/6/13663349/1796974.jpg)
The students loved singing about Santa so much that they didn't even realize that they were reading and learning how to spell. How wonderful are cross-curricular connections?
Before singing, I had students use their reading strategies to discover what the song actually said. Students stretched out words and used the pictures to learn the lyrics.
After singing students went into writing workshop and wrote about the holidays, it was funny to hear them singing the song to remember how to properly spell Santa.

Happy Holidays!
December was an exciting month at Connaught Street Elementary School. We went on a skating field trip, made our own Christmas decorations, and preformed in the holiday concert. I enjoyed both observing and taking part in the holiday excitement around the school and among my own students.

Although it seemed that a lot of the time was spent laying on the ice, the Kindergartens loved their field trip the the rink!

The students built their own Christmas trees and snowflakes to decorate for the holiday season.

Both Kindergarten classes got together to sing for the Christmas Concert, they sounded lovely!
